22nd Annual Great Arizona Beer Festival
Most Original Beer of Festival 2010

Sonoran Brewing Company's White Chocolate Ale

For the first time in its 22 year history, the Great Arizona Beer Festival awarded select festival beers with the honors of Best Beer, Most Refreshing and Most Original. The beers were evaluated by a panel of judges including Arizona Republic/azcentral.com, 944 magazine and DRAFT magazine. Out of the 11 judges, nine have passed the Beer Judging Certification Program, which certifies and ranks beer judges through an examination and monitoring process. Sonoran Brewing Company brought home the Inaugural Award for Most Original Beer of the Festival for its Sonoran White Chocolate Ale.

Sonoran Brewing Company's White Chocolate Ale

Sonoran's commercial description calls their White Chocolate Ale "light, refreshing, and completely unique," and, for once, it's not just a bullshit company line. Chocolate stouts are pretty commonplace now, but this is the first time we've had a light, honey-colored chocolate beer at a local pub. We adore the Sonoran White Chocolate Ale because it's potent, but pale and sweet enough to drink any time of day. The ale has a thin white head that never seems to disappear and just the right balance of hoppiness, with a slight bittersweet aftertaste. If you've got a good nose for beer, the Sonoran White Chocolate Ale smells a bit like beer-infused brownies (what an awesome idea!) with hazelnut and vanilla notes. It's a deceptively light little brew, so be careful. At 4.7 percent alcohol, and with a body that's nearly as weightless as iced tea, it'd be pretty easy to get yourself in trouble with Sheriff Joe over this one.

Sonoran Brewing Company's Inebriator Stout

We don't remember drinking the Inebriator. Then again, how could we remember drinking anything containing 9 percent alcohol by volume? What we heard from our friends after re-hydrating, cleaning ourselves up, and figuring out which surface was the floor (without hitting it with our heads this time) was that the Inebriator from Sonoran Brewing Company is dark and delicious, like a caramel-wrapped chocolate revolution for your taste buds.
